Oligarchy Closes Door on Upstarts for President

Grace Poe no longer is a candidate for President of the Philippines. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the Southeast Asian nation issued a new ruling today. Because Grace Poe has not met the requirement of 10 years of continuous residency in the Philippines, according to the commission, she is not qualified to be a candidate. Until now, Grace Poe has been the frontrunner in the election.

But Grace Poe is not the only upstart to be denied the opportunity to replace the status quo of rule by a select, few families in the Philippines. Rodrigo Duterte, the popular mayor of Davao City who has captured the imagination of the masses in the Philippines, sees his candidacy under attack from the oligarchy, too.

Current President Aquino and the families who form his power base will do everything in their power to ensure that their chosen successor, Mar Roxas, becomes the next President of the Philippines.
